Marr Family beginnings

Marr Romance from Nathan Marr on Vimeo.

Here is a video of a short message that I gave a few weeks ago on the subject of courtship and specifically the founding of our family. My camera shut off about half way through the message. You can find the remainder in audio format at sermonaudio.com

How do you know that you know God?

Of all the questions in this life that we can answer this is certainly one of the most important. The connection between knowing God and the salvation of the soul is inseparable. Jesus said in John 17:2-3 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. (3) And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. So when I ask How do you know that you know God I am asking an important question about the very state of your soul. How do you know that you are saved from sin and in right relationship with God? This is the fundamental question to be asked of all religious people. How do you know that you know?

What is your answer?

John wrote in his first epistle concerning this issue. He gives a number of reasons that are summarized in one verse. 1John 2:3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. In this verse Jesus is equating our relationship with God to out relationship with our bible. How you treat God's law-word is how you treat God.

So do you know that you know God?

Patterns for Gathering

I am listening to a set of audio messages by Brother Scott Brown. Here is some writing that I have done based on my notes of his message A Biblical Case for Family Integrated Discipleship.

The pattern for ministry being used by the majority of churches today is not found in scripture. It has become so interwoven in church culture that it is considered sacred by many and any question raised regarding it is usually thought of as unorthodox. By following the pattern of age segregation it conforms itself to modern secular ideas of education which are firmly rooted in philosophies of Godless men like Plato and others. Had we held fast to the patterns in scripture we would have something very different.

Is the scripture alone sufficient to give us understanding of the gatherings of God's people? Will we value scripture more than the traditions of our current religious climate? Are we willing to allow the scripture to both govern and limit us? Or will we be inventors of creative ways of gathering, making the church subject to the will and whim of Man? Will we follow scripture alone or allow our own imaginations to govern us?

9 data points regarding the age integrated philosophy of worship in the O/T.

- Deut. 12:10-12
- Deut. 16 The feast of tabernacles.
- The psalms of ascents were sung by families.
- During the recitation of the covenanted Deut. 29:11.
- During the time of Joshua Joshua 8:34-35
- Ezra 10:1
- When Jehoshaphat prayed for the deliverance of the Lord.
- Ezra 12:43
- Joel 2:15-16

Age integration is not only an Old Testament concept.

- Jesus at the age of twelve was participating in the religious discourse of his day.
- Children were present when Jesus taught.
- Matt 21:15
- Jesus preached to whole Families. (sermon the the mount, feeding of the 5 thousand etc.)
- Rhoda was a girl.
- Paul's nephew and the 40 assassins (which proves nothing but is interesting).
- Children were present during the meetings of the early church which met in homes. Uticus
- Children were present in the church services in the book of acts.
- Children were present in the church gatherings in the churches of Emphasis and Colossae.
- Women are exhorted to teach the younger women in the church.

These set forth for us a pattern of children participating together with adults in the worship of the Lord. Nowhere in the scripture do we find any reference to age segregated ministry. No Sunday schools, no children's churches, and no youth groups.

What do we think of the patterns of the word of God? Do we love His word and value it enough to follow the ideology found in it? Do we desire to live out the commands and patterns of the Bible? Will we approach the scripture with a heart soft toward the Lord, or stiff necked in our own pride? Our approach to the scripture is the battle ground.

But some may ask, “Don't the Godless come up with good ideas in the area of education sometimes? Didn't Dewy, Roseau, and Darwin have some good ideas?” To whom I would simply respond, Do you want to be a child of Dewy or Roseau or Darwin or do you want to be a child or God? Choose you this day whom you will serve.

Let us shed the dark cloud of vain human philosophy and seek to please the God who has bought us. Let us not only believe in the inerrancy of the sacred text but also hold fast to it's sufficiency as our guide, committing ourselves to follow it's patterns diligently.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Pro 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

It is always good to evaluate our trust in the Lord. Is there any way in which I am not fully trusting in Christ? Is there some area of my life in which I am leaning on my own understanding instead of leaning on the wisdom of the Lord?

True faith in God will manifest itself in obedience to Him. If I trust Him and believe his word then doing what He says will be the natural result.

My own understanding is flawed by sin. Pro 28:26 Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered. Jesus said the following, Mar 7:21-22 "For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness". These are the natural tendencies of my flesh therefore my flesh is not to be trusted.

However if I acknowledge (intimately know) Him in all my ways I have the promise that He will direct my path.

1 Timothy 1

1Ti 1:1-6 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, 2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. 5 The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6 Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion,
